Get off the couch! America needs you

Your’e In America Now, So Please Speak Our Language
Immigration piece by James T. Moore

TV channels in foreign tongues. Product booklets with three or four languages. Instruction manuals you have to wade through for words you can read. Store clerks you can barely understand. Organizations promoting anti-English. And we taxpayers footing the bill.

What the hell country am I in anyway? It used to be called America, but with the merging of the United States with Mexico and Canada, I suspect we will soon be called something else; no, not the United Nations; we already have one too many of those.

And here is just one more example of the dilution of America as a nation; this one by a powerful politician guilty of arrogance, dereliction-of-duty, and un-Americanism in high places. And I’ve had it up to here with it.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has shown her true colors—ignoring the interests of the people she presumably represents (us).

Here’s the story. The Salvation Army was accused by the Equal Employment Commission (EEOC) of illegal discrimination at one of their stores. The store required their employees to speak English on the job.

To the “Army’s” rescue, came Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) who passed an amendment to an appropriations bill that barred the EEOC from using taxpayer money to sue the Salvation Army. Note: Alexander’s amendment got bipartisan support from both the Senate and the House.

In retaliation, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus demanded that the amendment be killed. And here’s where Speaker Pelosi got into the act. Caving in to Hispanic demands, Pelosi agreed to strip Alexander’s amendment from the omnibus spending bill. And, as a final slap in the Salvation Army’s face, she gave the writing of that section of the bill to the Mexican American Legal and Educational Defense Fund—an anti-English lobbying group!

So much for Speaker Pelosi’s deaf ear to the voices of the majority of our citizens, and also for side-stepping her duty to maintain and protect the many things—including our language-- that define America’s character, uniqueness, and individuality.

Not many years ago this offence to our heritage would never have gotten to first base.  As a boy, I remember that my city (Chicago) had neighborhoods of many nationalities. Italians, Swedes, Germans, Irish, Poles, etc., they were all there. Within their neighborhoods people spoke in there native tongues, and we considered it a natural thing for them to do. Out of their neighborhoods, they were on their own, doing the best they could to communicate in English, albeit with a foreign, but understandable, accent. If they were legal immigrants, fine; but as Americans, it was incumbent upon them to learn at least passable English.

But one thing that NEVER happened, as I recall, was political pressure put on us to learn THEIR languages; unless we cared to. That makes sense, even today. If, for example, I decided next week to live in Madrid, I could hardly expect my Spanish neighbors to learn English so we could converse with each other.

English may not be the “official” language of America, but it certainly has become our signature, our tongue, the heritable “voice” of our mother land.

Teddy Roosevelt knew this, and believed it, when in 1907 he said: “There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room but for one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
